FAQ

Answers for where sonder is today.

Here is what works today, what still depends on this deployment's configuration — plan pricing, payments, email delivery and domain routing — and what you can actually take with you.

How does sonder make money?

sonder’s platform fee on your sales is 0%. The business model is workspace plans — Free, Pro and Business. The pricing page reads the current plan catalog: until paid prices, allowances and support coverage are approved and verified with the payment provider, it says so instead of showing a number.

What does it cost to start?

Creating an account and a workspace takes no card. Anything a paid plan adds is listed on the pricing page only once its terms are approved.

When do I get paid?

Seller payouts run through Stripe Connect, set up by the workspace owner from Settings → Payouts. That page shows the provider's own facts — whether charges and payouts are enabled and what is still due. If this deployment does not have its Stripe credentials yet, the page says Stripe is not configured, and nothing can be sold or paid out until it is.

What card processing fees apply?

sonder’s platform fee is 0%; card processing is separate. Your payment processor sets its own rates, which vary by country and card type, so check your processor’s terms — sonder does not quote or infer them.

Can I use a custom domain?

Yes, when your workspace's configured plan includes custom domains and has domain allowance left — Settings → Plan shows what your plan includes. Domains are set up in Settings → Domain by the workspace owner or an admin — not in the page editor. Your platform address, https://sonder.xyz/your-handle, keeps working before, during and after any custom domain.

You claim one primary host (and, optionally, aliases), then prove control with a DNS TXT record. Ownership, routing and TLS are tracked as separate steps, and a host serves your published site only once each one is ready. If this deployment's routing target is not configured yet, you can still claim and verify a host, and the page says routing and TLS are waiting on that configuration. If the plan catalog is not configured, the page says eligibility cannot be evaluated yet. Removing a domain stops that host serving your site, and your platform address stays available. If a downgrade removes the custom-domain allowance, the host follows the plan's configured policy: either it redirects readers to your platform address, or it keeps serving while new domain changes stop.

Can I email my audience?

Yes, with consent. Email capture blocks and contact imports record each contact's consent state and evidence; an imported file can never override a withdrawal or suppression. Campaigns go only to marketing-eligible contacts. If this deployment's email delivery is not configured, a broadcast is never marked sent. Owners and admins with export permission can download audience CSVs with each contact's consent state and latest evidence from Exports; the portable package carries the full consent history.

Can I sell physical goods?

Yes. You fulfill physical goods yourself, with variants, stock, and tracking managed from your dashboard.

Can I sell a course?

Yes. Courses support self-paced lessons, sections, and dripped publishing so you can release material in stages.

How do refunds work?

Refunds follow your creator policy. See the refunds page for the details.

Can I leave sonder?

Two things are worth keeping apart. Who holds the rights in what you make is a legal question answered by the terms — and when no approved version is in force, that page says so rather than showing substitute text. This answer is the practical half: what you can actually take out and rebuild.

From Exports in your dashboard, a workspace owner or admin can request a versioned portable package of the work built here: your authored page documents with their draft and publication state, your site theme, navigation and SEO settings, your catalog with its prices, variants and editions, your courses with their sections, lessons, quizzes, published curriculum revisions and the lesson and course resources attached to them, the media you uploaded to sonder, and your business records — orders, order lines, settlements, customers, entitlements and audience contacts. Where a draft and its published version differ, both are kept and labelled, so nothing unpublished is mistaken for live content. Records about the people you serve, such as enrollments and progress, are included only when your role carries customer-export permission. Spreadsheet-friendly CSV versions of your business records download from the same place; the CSVs are a presentation of the same data, not the portability itself, and they are not enough to rebuild a website.

Every package carries a manifest that says exactly what is inside: the included files, their record counts, SHA-256 checksums for each attached original, and anything left out. The package explanation on the exports page shows the format version, the resource families included and what is always omitted; inside the package, the manifest maps how each record family relates to the others, every record keeps its named relationships and provenance, and each report's Machine JSON download carries its column dictionary, null rules and currency policy. Some exclusions are deliberate and always listed — account secrets, provider and payment credentials and private direct messages outside your authority never travel in an export. Amounts keep their original currency and minor units; nothing is converted or summed across currencies. If a file's stored bytes cannot be verified, the manifest records a missing-byte error for that file instead of quietly shipping a broken copy, and media you linked from another host exports as the link itself, since its bytes live with that provider. An export only enumerates files belonging to your workspace — a private file you bought from another creator stays with that creator's workspace and is not in your package — and if export permission is revoked mid-request, the remaining files are recorded as denied rather than leaked.

Be clear about what a package is not. It is not payment continuity: active payment mandates and subscriptions stay with your payment provider and must be set up again wherever you go, and no other platform is guaranteed to reproduce this site's layout — you get your structured content, media and records, not a clone. Completed download links expire after 24 hours; if a download has expired or a package finished incomplete, the request history on the exports page lets you regenerate it under your current permission. And an export is a product feature, not an operational backup of sonder — portable export and backup operations are separate things.

A package also comes back in. From Imports, an owner or admin with export permission can upload a sonder package into a workspace, inspect its manifest, omissions and missing files, map each record and review the consequences before applying it. Imported authored content arrives staged and private, as drafts — nothing is published or granted by an import. Audience contacts keep only the consent their recorded evidence supports, and an import never verifies a mailbox or overrides a withdrawal or suppression. Imported customer records never create access, licenses, subscriptions or payment mandates; money and rights history arrives as reference material for reconciliation only.

Can I work with a team?

Yes. In Settings → Team, the owner and admins invite people by email, and each invitation shows its own delivery and acceptance state. The owner keeps billing, payouts, ownership and closure; admins run day-to-day content, catalog, orders and community; financial or license powers reach an admin only through the owner's explicit grant; moderators work only in the community spaces assigned to them. The last owner can never be removed — ownership moves only when the person you choose accepts the transfer.

Where do I get help?

Signed in, in-app support saves every request with a case reference, a status and a history you can come back to — no workspace needed, so it works if you only buy. For a specific purchase, open it from your library or receipt and choose “Get support”, which links the case to that order. Your sign-in, email, rights requests and account closure live in Settings → Account, also without a workspace.

The contact page has a copyable address for email, which is a separate channel outside your case history. Service status lists the notices an operator has reviewed and published; it makes no uptime or response-time promise, and when it cannot load it says so rather than reporting that everything is fine.

Is there a mobile app?

Not today. sonder is web-based and works on mobile, but there is no native mobile app.

Who builds sonder?

sonder is an independent project built by Joshua Baek. Read more on the about page.
